HTC vows to appeal patent ruling in favour of Apple
Calcutta News.Net Monday 18th July, 2011
The Taiwanese mobile phone company HTC has indicated it will appeal against a US ruling that it violated two patents owned by Apple.
HTC and Apple are fierce rivals in the intensely competitive smartphone market and the ruling, if upheld, could see the United States ban imports of certain HTC phones.
As a result, shares in HTC were down 7% on Monday, despite the company’s announcement of an appeal.
The US trade commission on Friday ruled that HTC violated two Apple patents when it produced mobile phones based on the Android operating system. Apple had accused their rival of violating ten patents.
A final decision on the ruling is due to be made in Washington by the commission’s full sex-member panel in December.
