Sensex breaches 18,000, broader markets in green too

Indian equities markets were trading firmly in the green with a benchmark index breaching the 18,000-mark amid positive Asian cues.
The 30-scrip sensitive index (Sensex) of the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE), which opened at 17,804.94 points, rose to 18,043.36 points, up 315.87 points or 1.78 percent from its previous close at 17,727.49 points.
The Sensex has been languishing below the 18,000-point mark since the last six trading days.
The 50-scrip S&P CNX Nifty of the National Stock Exchange was also trading in the green at 5,414.6 points, up 1.78 percent.
Broader markets were also in the green with the BSE midcap index ruling 1.53 percent higher and the BSE smallcap index up 1.38 percent.
The market breadth was positive, with 1,798 stocks advancing, 779 on the decline and 91 emaining unchanged.
Among gainers on the Sensex were Hero Honda, SBI, Cipla and ONGC, while the only two losers on the benchmark were RIL and RIL Infra.
Asian markets were trading in the green.
The Nikkei of the Japanese stock exchange closed 0.85 percent higher at 9,678.71 points, while the Hang Seng of the Hong Kong stock exchange was trading 1.47 percent up at 22,078.02 points.
However, the Chinese Shanghai composite index moved up 2.13 percent to trade at 2,745.45 points.
