After World Cup win, Rajkot women take to cricket enthusiastically
Calcutta News.Net Saturday 7th May, 2011
The Saurashtra Cricket Association in Rajkot is abeehive of activity these days, with women cricketers taking to the sport like duck to water in the wake of India's World Cup win after 28 years.
Around 70 women have enrolled themselves in a coaching camp, which is surprising, considering that till five years ago, Saurashtra was finding it tough to select even 16 players to participate in any tournament.
Shirish Bucha, a selector for the Saurashtra women cricket team, claimed that the standard of cricket has improved tremendously in the wake of the World Cup win. She said that there was now a tremendous craze among girls to play the sport.
Mrudulla Jadeja, a women cricketer, hopes one of them gets to represent the Indian team for the women's World Cup tournament to be played in India in 2013.
Most of the girls who have joined the camp want to be all rounders.
Some said there should be more tournaments for them to hone their skills. Currently, these women play only two tournaments in a year. (ANI)
