Workforce being slashed at Japan Airlines

Japan Airlines has decided to cut jobs and close 49 unprofitable domestic and international routes.

As part of its restructuring process, the company will slash 16,000 jobs while concentrating on pushing more passengers through its Narita International Airport and Haneda Airport slots.

The company, while expanding capacity through Tokyo’s main gateways, will cut 103 aircraft, mainly aging 747s, from its fleet.

JAL has been hit hard by falling passenger numbers and has also been facing increasing competition from Japanese rival All Nippon Airways.

Last week, JAL said it would most likely launch a low-cost airline subsidiary, but since then has not elaborated.
