Canadian airports to cut back on security staff
Calcutta News.Net Tuesday 31st August, 2010
Canadian airport security screening staff have been informed there will be future cutbacks in their area as the travel industry copes with a downturn in passengers through many of the country’s terminals.
The cutbacks have been controversial as they have come during continuing terrorism investigations in Ontario that led to the arrest of four terror suspects.
Saint John Airport in New Brunswick is the first to let security staff go, with eight security screeners to be laid off in the middle of September and eight others having full-time hours cut.
The union representing about 1,000 security workers in Canada has said the affect on passengers will be severe, leading to major delays at airports.
The passenger screening sector is a difficult employment area, as it entails difficulties with obtaining security clearance for potential new staff and then recruiting and keeping them in their jobs.
