Muslim conversion accusations follow Gadhafi in Italy

Some Italian politicians who are aligned to the Vatican, have complained that Libyan leader, Moammar Gadhafi, tried to convert Christians while on an official visit to Rome.

The visit to Italy by the Libyan leader began on Sunday, when he gave a lecture on Islam to a few-hundred Italian women and urged them to convert, handing them copies of the Koran.

After the event, the head of the Union of Christian Democrats, Rocco Buttiglione, said he was certain he would not be able to go to Libya and persuade Muslims to convert to Christianity and be free to leave.

He said that Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi should be angered by the behavior, rather than sacrificing principles and dignity for the sake of trade and investment with Libya.

While in Italy, Colonel Gadhafi will visit the town of Antrodoco, which is in the mountains, close to the quake-striken town of l’Aquila.

Residents in Antrodoco have taken to the Libyan leader who has said he wants to invest in the town where he met US president Obama at the G8 summit last year.

Residents have welcomed the prospect of Gadhafi bringing money into the small town and have promised a party when he arrives.

Mr Gadhafi has pledged to invest as much as $19-million in Antrodoco to build a luxury hotel and a bottled water plant.
