Volcano on island of Montserrat spews ash

Calcutta News.Net
Saturday 13th February, 2010

A volcanic eruption on the island of Montserrat has caused disruptions for holiday-makers throughout the Caribbean.

The international airport on the French island Guadeloupe was closed when thick clouds mushroomed into the air.

Flights were also cancelled on the neighbouring islands of Antigua and Barbuda.

Volcanic ash from the eruption severely disrupted air traffic due to concerns that ash could seriously damage aircraft motors.

Planes have been diverted to other airports in the region.

Large parts of the local islands are covered by a heavy layer of ash.
