Tavern on the Green to close on New Year’s Eve
Calcutta News.Net Wednesday 30th December, 2009
The famous restaurant in New York's Central Park will serve its last meal on New Year’s Eve.
After serving more than 700,000 meals annually, Tavern on the Green, in bankruptcy, owing $8 million, will go out with a bang as the new year is counted in.
In coming weeks, an auction of Tavern memorabilia is expected to bring in some of the owed money, especially when the restaurant’s Baccarat and Waterford chandeliers, Tiffany stained glass, and mural depicting Central Park is auctioned.
Even the restaurant's name is up for grabs.
But first, a Manhattan federal judge will have to decide who owns the name: the city of New York or the current owner.
For 75 years, since it first opened amid the Great Depression, the Tavern has attracted clients from around the world.
