A station officer was killed and property worth several lakh rupees damaged after a high tension wire fell in a police station premises in Jalaun district of Uttar Pradesh Sunday, police said.

The incident took place in the residential campus of Kotaund police station.

'I went to meet the station officer, sub-inspector Rajesh Chaudhary, in his house inside the campus Sunday morning but repeated knocking on the door brought no reply. I then scaled the wall and entered his house only to find him lying on the ground,' Inspector Jahir Singh told reporters.

'We took him to the hospital where the doctors declared he was dead.'

'The high tension wire passing above the police station had snapped and it appears that besides killing Chaudhary, the incident resulted in a fire which destroyed most of the belongings inside his house,' Singh said.
