Guantanamo Bay gets a reprieve

Calcutta News.Net
Tuesday 19th May, 2009

The Guantanamo Bay detention camp will remain open after funding to close the prison was rejected by the US Congress.

The Senate has stripped $80 million from a war funding bill, which was requested by the White House.

Democrats and Republicans are concerned about the closing of the camp where 240 terrorist suspects are still housed.

Even members of the president's own party have become concerned about the release of terrorist suspects into their constituencies.

But, Democratic leaders say they will reconsider the funds if the White House gives more details about the proposed close down date of January 2010.

The closure deadline was set in Mr Obama's first week of office.
