US President George Bush has told his final Cabinet meeting that he will go back to Texas with a sense of accomplishment.

Mr Bush, speaking during a farewell meeting with his Cabinet, said: "This administration has had a good and solid record and I am very proud of it. I tell people that I leave town with a great sense of accomplishment and my head held high."

His final White House meeting was met with loud applause from the Cabinet after the president spoke of progress in areas from education to the environment.

He said the biggest achievement of his administration had been keeping America safe "by providing tools for our professionals as well as asking our military to do hard work."
