US Senate may agree to Illinois nomination
Calcutta News.Net Wednesday 7th January, 2009
US Senate Democratic leaders have met Roland Burris, the man nominated to fill the Illinois Senate seat vacated by Barack Obama.
Senate Majority leader Harry Reid and the number two Senate Democrat, Dick Durbin have said they hope to quickly end the controversy over the Senate seat after Burris was picked by fellow Democrat Illinois Governor Rod Blagojevich.
The Senate leaders have said they will decide whether to seat Burris after the Illinois Supreme Court decides on whether his appointment must be certified.
Senators initially said they would not seat Burris because he was chosen by Governor Rod Blagojevich, who was arrested last month for an alleged scheme to profit from the appointment.
Senate leaders initially said the Blagojevich connection made him ineligible to take office.
