Bahrain causeway to improve commerce

Calcutta News.Net
Monday 5th January, 2009

A new US$3 billion causeway, linking Bahrain with Qatar, will be the longest in the world.

The Friendship Causeway is expected to boost the economy of the island nation with 40km of twin carriageway linking the two countries in one of the most important infrastructure projects in the region.

Travel time between Bahrain and Qatar by car will be reduced from the current four-and-a-half hours to around 30 minutes, helping Bahrain to fulfill its role as the major access point for international companies.

The causeway will also provide a connection for future high-speed freight and passenger rail lines between the countries.

There are also plans to extend the route to link Istanbul and Turkey to Muscat in Oman.
