Popular drug linked to cancer

A popular osteoporosis drug made by pharma company, Merck, has been found to carry a possible risk for esophageal cancer.
US Food and Drug Administration officials have reported that Fosamax and so-called bisphosphonate drugs may be linked to cancer in some patients.
The FDA has received 23 reports of esophageal tumors since Fosamax, known generically as alendronate, was introduced in 1995.
In Europe and Japan, 21 cases involving Fosamax have been recorded.
Fosamax is a drug used in the treatment of bone-weakening osteoporosis.
