Delhi airport gears up to fight fog

Calcutta News.Net
Wednesday 3rd December, 2008 (IANS)

With winter setting in, the Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport here is gearing up to tackle the fog menace, expected to hit the city by Dec 10, an airport official said Wednesday.

'The fog as we predicted will hit the capital, especially the airport area by Dec 10. This is according to our updated study,' R.K. Jenamani, the meteorological office director of the IGI Airport, told IANS.

According to Met officials, fog is the biggest threat to the Delhi airport.

But the newly-built runway is yet to be equipped with surface movement radars, which would detect movements on the runway.

Asked about this, Arun Arora, associate vice-president (corporate communications) of Delhi International Airport Ltd (DIAL), said the radars were undergoing trial and efforts were being made to get them installed before fog sets in.

'We are doing everything to minimise the impact of the fog,' said Arora.

According to Jenamani, fog is expected to remain till January next year.

Airlines have so far not rescheduled any of their services because of weather disturbance.

DIAL, which runs the Delhi airport, has asked the airlines to ensure that CAT IIIB-trained pilots are employed on Delhi-bound flights.

CAT IIIB is a device that helps pilots locate runways even in extremely low visibility conditions.
