Japanese falling back on greenhouse commitment

Calcutta News.Net
Wednesday 12th November, 2008

Japanese greenhouse gas emissions have been pushed to record high levels.

Preliminary Government data showed greenhouse gas emissions climbed 2.3 per cent in the year to March.

The government of Japan, which is trying to meet the Kyoto Protocol climate pact, has had to ask itself about the effectiveness of Japan's reliance on voluntary industry emission curbs.

Japan has been reluctant to impose a mandatory cap on company emissions but, under the Kyoto pact, must cut its emissions of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases to 6 per cent below 1990 levels between 2008-12.
