Rs.4 mn looted from post office in Punjab
Calcutta News.Net Thursday 6th November, 2008 (IANS)
A gang of four unidentified men Thursday looted Rs.4 million in cash from the General Post Office (GPO) in this Punjab town, a police official said.
The heist took place early morning when the GPO was closed.
The gang attacked security guard at the GPO Ashok Kumar, and another person and tied them with a rope before decamping with the money. The two men later told the police that the gang had sharp-edged weapons.
The money was taken away from the safe of the GPO. Another Rs.8 mn cash was inside the strong room of the GPO but the thieves did not loot that.
The incident came to light when other employees of the post office arrived for work and found both persons tied inside.
The police officials said they had collected fingerprints and other evidence from the spot. They questioned GPO employees about the theft.
'Only someone knowing that so much money was lying inside the GPO could have done this,' a police official said. Email this story to a friend
