Court refuses anticipatory bail to Rizwanur family friend
Calcutta News.Net Friday 24th October, 2008 (IANS)
A court here Friday refused anticipatory bail to Syed Mohiuddin alias Pappu, a family friend of Muslim youth Rizwanur Rehman who was found dead under mysterious circumstances last year after his marriage to the daughter of a well-known industrialist.
The Central Bureau Of Investigation (CBI) has filed charges against Pappu for accepting a bribe from Rizwanur's father-in-law Ashok Todi to separate the couple.
'Pappu had taken a bribe of Rs.1,100,000 in two instalments on Sep 7 and 19, 2007, from Ashok and his brother Pradip Todi to separate Rizwanur and his wife Priyanka. The deals were done at a five-star hotel beside the EM Bypass (in the eastern part of the city),' a CBI officer told reporters Friday here.
Pappu had applied for an anticipatory bail at a city court Tuesday.
Rizwanur had married Ashok Todi's daughter Priyanka last year. A graphic designer, he was found dead by the railway tracks of Patipukur in north Kolkata Sep 21, 2007, barely a month after the marriage. As a Hindu-Muslim love story gone horribly wrong, the death had shocked the entire nation.
Ashok Todi and his brother Pradip, along with four city police officers, were subsequently accused of threatening and pressurising Rizwanur to stay away from Priyanka.
