Three Afghans jailed for 10 years on drug charges
Calcutta News.Net Friday 10th October, 2008 (IANS)
A court here Friday sentenced three Afghans to 10 years' rigorous imprisonment on drug charges, noting that the drug trade was being used to fund terror in India.
"Investigations show that the present case has international ramifications. Apart from the accused, some high and mighty persons in India might have been involved in the case... Police have subverted the course of investigation and shut its eyes to reach the proper conclusion,' special judge Babu Lal said, suggesting the Delhi Police Commissioner order an inquiry into the case.
'The money, obtained by transaction in narcotics in turn is used in promoting extremism. India has become victim of terrorism for past decades. In such a situation, if the police have acted in such irresponsible manner, it is a question of concern not only for police department but also for the country itself,' the judge said.
The court's observations came after it noted that the police recovered cellphones from each of the accused - Mohammad Nasir, Fazal Haq and Mohammad Rahim, all residents of Afghanistan - but never tried to find out their mobile numbers or their contacts in India.
' The calculated action on the part of police shows that their conduct has not been above board,' the court noted.
