Two protesters killed in Srinagar violence

Calcutta News.Net
Friday 10th October, 2008 (IANS)

With an injured protester succumbing to his injuries in hospital Friday evening, the toll in Friday's violence in this Jammu and Kashmir summer capital has gone up to two, the police said.

After Friday prayers, an unruly mob resorted to heavy stone pelting at the police and paramilitary Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) squads deployed in the old city's Nowhatta area, four km from city centre Lal Chowk.

'As a baton charge and tear gas shells failed to quell the protesters, the police fired rubber bullets, in which one protester was killed at Nowhatta. Several policemen and CRPF jawans were injured because of the heavy stone pelting by the mob,' a senior police officer told IANS here.

'Another injured protester, who was admitted to hospital for treatment, succumbed to his injuries in the evening,' the officer added.

Separatists called upon the people to stage peaceful protests after the Friday prayers and shut businesses, traffic, educational institutions, and banks after midday Friday and observe a complete shutdown Saturday against Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's two-day visit to Kashmir.
