Another week, another fake currency seizure in Uttar Pradesh
Calcutta News.Net Friday 3rd October, 2008 (IANS)
In yet another case of counterfeit currency seizure in Uttar Pradesh, a Reserve Bank of India (RBI) team raided the currency chest of Union Bank of India (UBI) in Gorakhpur district Friday and recovered fake notes with a nominal value of Rs.35,000, the police said.
'The raid was conducted in the Cantonment branch of UBI early today (Friday),' Gorakhpur superintendent of police, R.K. Srivastava, told IANS.
'The bank manager, D.K. Tandon, lodged an FIR against unknown persons and investigations are under process,' Srivastava added.
Fake currency has been found from all parts of the state after a fake currency racket, amounting to nearly Rs.50 million, surfaced in the State Bank of India (SBI) branch of Domariyaganj following the arrest of its cashier, Sudhakar Tripathi, early August.
'The branch manager of Punjab National Bank (PNB), Gorakhnath branch, lodged an FIR with us a fortnight ago complaining that fake currency worth Rs.27,000 was recovered from the currency chest,' inspector Radhey Shyam Rai of Gorakhnath police station in Gorakhpur told IANS.
The PNB chest stocks over Rs.10 billion at a time and and supplies money to over two dozen branches of nationalized banks in and around Gorakhpur.
'We hope to crack both the cases very soon and have gathered vital leads during the investigation,' Srivatava added.
