Russia set to open Iranian nuclear plant

Calcutta News.Net
Monday 8th September, 2008

Representatives of Russian company building first Iranian nuclear plant in Bushehr say its activation is getting closer.

The Russian state-run company that is building Iran's first nuclear plant has said preparations for the reactor's launch are almost at an end.

It is believed by the end of the year, the Russian company will take steps to make the launch of the Bushehr plant irreversible.

The launch date will be determined after talks between Russian and Iranian nuclear officials this month.

Iran is paying more than $1 billion to build the 1,000-megawatt light-water reactor, which has recently been held up by questions of payment and the schedule for the provision of nuclear fuel by Russia.

The United States and other Western nations have criticised Russia for building Bushehr, for fear that weapons could eventually be manufactured.
