Chhattisgarh staff withdraw strike

Calcutta News.Net
Friday 29th August, 2008 (IANS)

Chhattisgarh government employees have withdrawn their indefinite strike scheduled to begin Friday after the government agreed to pay arrears from January 2006.

Nearly 250,000 state employees had called an indefinite strike after the government Aug 27 said while it has agreed in principle to implement the Sixth Pay Commission recommendations from next month, it would not pay the arrears.

Rocked by the threat, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government Friday announced it would pay the arrears in instalments.

The state goes to assembly polls in November, and sources inside the BJP admit the party does not want to anger 250,000 employees and their families.
