Chhattisgarh state staff to strike work over pay

Calcutta News.Net
Sunday 17th August, 2008 (IANS)

Over 250,000 Chhattisgarh government employees, including officers, announced Sunday they would go on a day-long stir Aug 21 to push for implementation of the Sixth Pay Commission recommendations.

'The Chhattisgarh Employees-Officers Joint Forum has been formed to talk with the state government and decide future action in case it fails to accept the Pay Commission recommendations,' forum convenor Subhash Mishra told IANS.

'Over 250,000 employees of the state government will observe a strike on Aug 21 to press for acceptance of the recommendations, and then we will review whether we should go in for an indefinite strike,' he said.

Chhattisgarh's Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government, in view of the forthcoming assembly polls in October-November, will likely implement the pay panel's suggestion that government salaries be hiked.

The Union cabinet Aug 14 approved the new pay scale structure for five million government employees that will see an average salary increase of 21 percent, and cost the exchequer Rs.221.31 billion in the current fiscal.
