Tsvangarai travel documents confiscated

Zimbabwe authorities have taken away the travel documents of opposition leader Morgan Tsvangirai, as he was about to board a plane for Johannesburg to attend the Southern African Development Community summit.

The opposition Movement for Democratic Change said that the Harare airport immigration officials seized Mr Tsvangirai's passport.

He will now not be able to go to South Africa to attend the summit, which is to be attended by 14-member nations.

The meeting, scheduled for Saturday and Sunday, is expected to generally focus on the political toubles in Zimbabwe.

Zimbabwe's rival parties started power-sharing talks on July 24th to seek a solution to the country's political stalemate and economic turmoil.

South African President Thabo Mbeki, who mediated the talks, had high expectations that the parties could reach a deal ahead of the SADC summit.

However, the talks stalled when Mr Tsvangirai left the discussions.
