Royal Indian tradition inspires designer Kavita Bhartia

With the wedding season around the corner, designer Kavita Bhartia is ready with her first trousseau collection for contemporary brides, inspired by the royal Indian tradition.
'Royal Indian culture is the inspiration for my colourful collection because Indian culture and tradition is simply fascinating,' Bhartia said at its showing at the swish Ogaan outlet at the Hauz Khas Village here Friday.
'Indian tradition offers so much variety and it is up to the designer to create unusual and different designs from that,' she added.
Bhartia has been in the industry since 1989 and is a well-known name in the fashion fraternity for her contemporary designs. This time, she has moved out of her signature image of contemporary western wear and forayed into new territory.
Why did it take her 19 years to launch a trousseau collection?
'I wanted to do it for a long time, but it never happened due to my other work commitments. Its better late than never,' she said.
'Bridal wear is an important part of Indian collection and it needs to be addressed. Though it was not easy to achieve, but finally I have made it and I am happy about it,' she added.
Her collection has an exquisite range of beautifully crafted wedding lehengas, saris, kurtas and other traditional ensembles in a vibrant palette of fuchsia, crimson, emerald green and sapphire - all perfect for the wedding mood.
'My collection has something for everyone. The USP of my collection is the revival of the sari,' Bhartia maintained.
The designer has used a lot of silk and brocade in her collection, as also loads of sequins, pearls, stonework, zardozi and embossed flowers. For blouses, she has mixed lycra and silk for the perfect fit, and for saris and kurtas has used leheria and banarasi prints.
Will she showcase the same collection at upcoming Wills Lifestyle India Fashion Week (WIFW) in Oct?
'I will be displaying my signature collection. I haven't started working on that yet as I was way too busy with this (bridal) collection,' she said.
