Campaign for n-deal, Sonia asks Congress leaders

Calcutta News.Net
Saturday 12th July, 2008 (IANS)

Congress president Sonia Gandhi Saturday asked party general secretaries to campaign for the India-US civil nuclear deal over which the Left has parted ways with the government, reducing it to a minority.

At a meeting of the party general secretaries at Gandhi's 10 Janpath residence, the Congress chief also asked them to ensure that Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's government won the July 22 trust vote.

'The general secretaries were asked to ensure that all the MPs from the states they are in charge of are present during the floor test and ensure the government wins the confidence of the house,' a general secretary who attended the meeting told IANS.

The United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government was reduced to a minority after its Left allies withdrew their support over the contentious nuclear agreement. The government is seeking a vote of confidence during a two-day special session beginning July 21.

The Congress leaders also discussed the party's strategy in the wake of the latest developments.

According to party sources, the Congress leadership has warned the leaders that there should not be any differences among them in backing the nuclear deal, an issue which is considered to be close to Manmohan Singh's heart.

At the Congress Working Committee meeting Friday, party general secretary Rahul Gandhi also told his seniors that no leader should 'be defensive' about the nuclear deal and should wholeheartedly support the prime minister.
