Protests continue in Jammu, shutdown extended

Calcutta News.Net
Sunday 6th July, 2008 (IANS)

Protests against the cancellation of land transfer to the Amarnath shrine authorities continued here for the seventh day Sunday as agitators called for extending the shutdown by 48 hours.

The Amarnath Sangharsh Samiti, leading the agitation, announced extension of the shutdown in Jammu by 48 hours.

The Jammu region has been witnessing protests since June 30 though the government ordered the cancellation of the land transfer July 1.

Protesters stopped a train near Bari Brahmana, blocked the Jammu-Pathankote highway and shouted slogans against the Congress government.

They have also given a call for the social boycott of the legislators who would vote for the Ghulam Nabi Azad government in the trust vote in Srinagar scheduled for Monday.

The state government cancelled the allocation of 40 hectares of forest land to the Shri Amarnath Shrine Board following violent protests in the Kashmir Valley last month. The land was meant to provide facilities to pilgrims visiting the Hindu cave shrine of Amarnath. The cancellation led to more protests, this time in the Jammu region.
