Saturday 5th July, 2008 (IANS)

At least 14 people were killed in at least six districts of Uttar Pradesh as several houses collapsed and trees were uprooted due to heavy rains, official said Saturday.

With details of the damage done by Friday's rainfall still being collected, officials said the deaths were reported from Sultanpur, Allahabad, Pratapgarh, Ambedkar Nagar, Unnao and Mahoba districts of the state.

The highest toll was reported from Sultanpur, where six people including three girls died in separate incidents of house collapse in Kadipur, Musafirkhana and Gauriganj tehsils of the district, officials said.

'We have already started the relief work for the bereaved family members and those displaced following the rains,' Sultanpur sub-divisional magistrate Vidya Shanker told IANS.

Meanwhile, after the heavy rains in Faizabad district, the Saryu river has crossed its danger mark, officials said. Now, with the river in spate, the flood threat looms large in over 100 villages of the district including Dhemva, Mangalsi, Ramnagar, Dhaurhara and others, the officials added.

Faizabad district magistrate Anil Garg told IANS: 'We are on a high alert and in constant touch with the natural calamity department.'

Though the river was flowing above the danger mark, it was still 90 cm below the high flood level (HFL), he added.
