Barack Obama to make military life more tolerable for gays
Calcutta News.Net Friday 11th April, 2008
Senator Barack Obama has said he will possibly repeal the “don't ask, don't tell” policy for homosexuals in the military if he is elected president.
The Democratic presidential front-runner has told The Advocate, a gay magazine in the US, that he wants to repeal the policy, which was brought in when Bill Clinton was president.
He said his priority for the Joint Chiefs would be the security of the country, not their position on the policy.
He told the Advocate: "We're spending large sums of money to kick highly qualified gays and lesbians out of the military, some of whom possess specialties like Arab-language capabilities that we desperately need. That doesn't make us more safe."
