Mr. Obama is clearly an intelligent man who has much time thinking about what America wants and needs. Unfortunately, he has picked a topic which he can personally know little about. I am a criminal defense lawyer for the US Army — thus I unfortunately must deal with the worst the Army has to offer. I have been both a Marine and a Soldier — an officer and enlisted. As the adage goes, you can take the boy off the street but you can’t take the street out of the boy . . . I know how Soldiers think and I know how they react. There’s a really good reason why Clinton put into place the policy he did in the 90s, because if Soldiers knew that “one of their own” was not really “one of their own," they would pounce on their brother in arms. The Army is not too terribly different than prison in many ways. These guys don’t want anyone in their unit who is in the least bit effeminate. These “kinds of guys” are detrimental to good order and discipline and have never been accepted by mainstream Soldiers. So you can use the military as a social barometer all you want, but the only thing that will be accomplished is higher rates of assaults and lower morale. On another note, what evidence do you have to support that the Army is spending “large sums of money” to kick homosexuals out of the Army? In my 10 years I have seen one “Chapter 15." For those not familiar with a “Chapter 15," it is a chapter from Army Regulation 635-200 (enlisted separations) that permits a commander to separate a Soldier who has engaged in homosexual conduct. So, I don’t know where this information put out by the Obama campaign comes from, because I handle Army separations every day (and have for many years), yet I’ve seen 1 (out of thousands of discharges). The reason? Commanders are terribly afraid that they will inadvertently discharge a Soldier who has not engaged in homosexual conduct, in obvious contravention of Army policy. Bottom line: Mr. Obama’s plan clearly shows he has no “real” knowledge of how the US military works and operates, for if he did, he would not envisage such a ludicrous and unrealistic policy.
