Designer Mehta's collection fails to impress
Calcutta News.Net Saturday 29th March, 2008 (IANS)
Deep hues, heavily embroidered belts, cuffs, collars, big bun hairstyle and even bright, velvet shoes - Krishna Mehta's attempts to impress with her collection failed to elicit enthusiasm at the Lakme Fashion Week (LFW) here Saturday.
The designer is among the 57, established and new designers showcasing their creative brilliance at the March 29-April 2 fashion extravaganza being held at the National Centre for the Performing Arts (NCPA) here.
'My collection narrates the fable of a girl who leads a dark life, and one day finds the love of her life or I must say the life she loves,' Mehta told IANS after the show.
'In sync with the story, the collection initially offers deeper, darker tones like wine and navy blue depicting her dull life and finally moving on to lighter shades of pinks and olives portraying her brighter side of life.'
The women's wear line offered lots of tunics, short blouses, short dresses with flair and puffed sleeves matched with leggings, trousers and velvet slacks.
The men's wear had kurtas of varied styles and designs - angarakha, kimono and sherwani - teamed with breeches and velvet shoes.
The designer embellished the clothes using velvet cuffs and collars and wide, heavily embroidered belts. There were also shirts with trousers and coats.
'Using natural fabrics like silk, cotton, brocade and georgettes, as I always do, I have created silhouettes that are both fitted and flowing. Zardozi, piping and sequin work is used extensively to adorn the line,' Mehta said.
The garments had lots of floral, and abstract prints.
'Apart from floral, I have used motifs like parrots, peacocks, eagles and vultures - indicative of my inner feeling to be free and fly high. Moreover, it indicates both the beautiful and wild side of nature,' the designer said.
Asked about the customers she is targeting, Mehta said: 'Across the globe, the fashion fraternity is one - there is no demarcation between international and domestic market for me. I want to seep into every part of the world and cater to every kind of customer.'
Manish Malhotra, Kiran Uttam Ghosh, Neeta Lulla, Sabyasachi Mukherjee and Wendell Rodricks are some of the other big names that will feature at the LFW.
