148 British BP employees, working in Russia for the Russian-British venture TNK-BP have been recalled to the UK.

The employees were told they were being made to leave Russia because of visa problems.

The TNK-BP employees had been facing earlier problems of extending their work visas.

Sources close to the situation earlier said some of the company's staff had travelled to Russia on business visas, while they should have obtained work visas.
