BMW case: Sanjeev Nanda claims he was not inside the car
Calcutta News.Net Monday 19th November, 2007 (IANS)
The sensational BMW hit-and-run case Monday took a new turn when prime accused Sanjeev Nanda claimed in a city court that he was not inside the car which allegedly mowed down six people in 1999.
Claiming innocence, Nanda alleged that investigators implicated him as they were in a hurry to work out the case.
'I am innocent. I was neither the driver of alleged BMW car nor was I an occupant of the car at the time of the alleged occurrence,' Nanda said.
He was recording his statement before Additional Sessions Judge Vinod Kumar after being recalled by the court following surfacing of fresh evidence against him during the deposition of witnesses recently.
'I have been implicated in the case only because the offending vehicle belonged to my sister and because the police were anxious to solve a case in which police personnel were killed,' he said, while answering 42 questions posed by the court, based on fresh evidence.
Nanda termed Sunil Kulkarni, an alleged eyewitness to the accident, as a 'false' witness and said he was a man with questionable character against whom several cheating cases were pending in Mumbai courts.
