11 child labourers rescued in Udaipur

Calcutta News.Net
Monday 23rd July, 2007 (IANS)

Eleven child labourers were rescued by a non-governmental organisation (NGO) in Rajasthan's Udaipur district when they were being taken to work in the cotton factories of Gujarat.

The NGO, Gandhi Manav Kalyan Society (GMKS) Sunday rescued the children, mostly tribals from poor families, from the Jhadol block of the district.

'These children were rescued on Sunday when they were being sent to the cotton factories of Gujarat, especially in Ahmedabad, Disa and other districts of Gujarat', Meenakshi Paliwal, an official of the NGO, told IANS over telephone Monday.

'Our director while visiting the field areas of Jhadol block, over 60 km from here, saw a covered jeep carrying the children to Gujarat. He immediately called the police who arrested the driver, but unfortunately the middleman escaped,' she said.

'All the children were between nine and 15 years old and only four of them have attended school while the rest were never enrolled,' Madan Nagda, director, GMKS said.

All the children were sent to their homes. When their parents were asked about it, they said their poor economic condition forced them to take this step, he added.

'I want to go to school, but my parents want me to earn money. So I have to go. But I really want to take up studies,' said Prabhu Garasiya, a 12-year-old boy who was rescued.
