Indonesia changes laws on free speech
Calcutta News.Net Wednesday 18th July, 2007 (BigNewsNetwork.com)
Some parts of Indonesia’s criminal code, which have been used to stifle free speech, are being changed.
Indonesia's Constitutional Court has scrapped some sections that have been used to ban speeches and writings that incite hostility towards the Government.
Articles 154 and 155 of the criminal code date back to the Dutch colonial era and have regularly been used by successive Indonesian governments to jail political opponents.
In December the Constitutional Court threw out laws against mocking the President and Vice-President or burning their pictures.
