A senior ruling Biju Janata Dal (BJD) leader was killed and two cops injured when their jeep hit a tree in Orissa's Malkangiri district Sunday afternoon, police said.
Kanduru Pradhan, 55, district vice president of BJD, was returning from Kalimela town along with two personnel of the Orissa Special Arm Police (OSAP) when the mishap occurred.
Pradhan was driving the vehicle when it hit a tree near MV 16 village some 15 km from the district headquarters, a district police official told IANS.
The local villagers took the injured Pradhan and two cops to hospital, but Kandaru died on the way, the police officer said.
An eminent leader, Kandaru was on the hit list of Maoists. He had been living at Malkangiri town since past few years after the Maoists attacked his house several times at Bejangwada village in the same district.
