India, Russia, China for multi-polar world, discuss Iran
India, Russia and China, the three countries with growing international influence and economies, Wednesday intensified their trilateral cooperation and pushed for promoting multilateral diplomacy to resolve burning regional and global issues like the Iranian nuclear crisis.
Reaffirming their commitment to create a 'fair and balanced multi-polar world order' with a transparent and democratic United Nations as its core, the three countries said in a joint statement that 'cooperation, not confrontation' should govern approaches to regional and global affairs.
They also agreed to accelerate international cooperation to wage a sustained fight against global terrorism that is devoid of 'double standards'.
'We agreed that cooperation rather than confrontation should govern approaches to regional and global affairs,' External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee said at a joint press interaction here with his counterparts, Sergei Lavrov of Russia and Li Zhaoxing of China.
Earlier, the foreign ministers met for nearly three hours and discussed a range of international issues, including the Iranian nuclear crisis, Iraq, Afghanistan, the Middle East peace process and denuclearisation of the Korean peninsula.
'We also agreed on the importance of the UN and that there was a need to make it more effective so that it reflects contemporary global realities,' Mukherjee said.
The Iranian nuclear issue figured prominently in discussions with all three agreeing that the deadlock between the P5+ Germany and Iran can be resolved through dialogue within the ambit of the International Atomic Energy Agency, an official source told IANS.
'We have a convergence of approach on the Iranian issue,' the source said.
The joint statement said the foreign ministers reaffirmed that trilateral cooperation was not directed against the interests of any other country and was, on the contrary, intended to promote international harmony and understanding and find common ground amidst divergent interests.'
'They also emphasized the strong commitment of India, Russia and China to multilateral diplomacy,' it said.
Although the three countries have made it clear that their trilateral cooperation was not designed to counterbalance the perceived US hegemony and unilateralism, the emphasis on multilateral diplomacy and creating a multi-polar world in the statement could be seen as a subtle critique of American policies towards Iran and Iraq.
India will host a trilateral business meeting here later this year that will encourage enhanced collaboration in diverse sectors, including energy, civil aviation, bio-technology, information technology and financial services.
India has also proposed that it would host a trilateral seminar on emerging geo-strategic trends this year, Mukherjee announced.
'We discussed most burning issues of world politics and had a broad approach on many international issues,' said Lavrov.
Underlining the need for reinvigorating the UN, he stressed that all regional and international problems can be resolved 'through dialogue'.
'We have to work harder for the democratisation of international relations based on multilateralism and diversity,' Li said, while underscoring 'strong complementarities' that exist between the three fast growing economies of the world.
Reacting to concerns about an anti-satellite test conducted by China last month, Li stressed that Beijing was committed to peace and tranquillity in outer space.
He also stressed on boosting tripartite economic cooperation and announced that China will host the next trilateral meeting of foreign ministers.
