Lufthansa to end wireless broadband Internet service

Calcutta News.Net
Tuesday 26th December, 2006 (IANS)

German airline Lufthansa has decided to switch off its wireless broadband Internet links for commercial passengers at the end of the year.

The company said it had no alternative after Boeing decided to scrap the inflight satellite-delivered service because it was running at a loss.

Lufthansa said it would like to continue with the inflight service, but it would take several months until it finds a new provider.

Some 66 of Lufthansa's 80 long-haul jets have been fitted with Boeing's Connexion service since it was launched more than two years ago.

A company spokesperson said passenger response had been good. The service has been available free of charge since October.

Boeing announced in August that it was scrapping the Connexion service on Dec 31 because of a lack of interest from the major air carriers.

The US plane manufacturer invested heavily in the satellite-based system but most airlines opted for cheaper Internet services using cellular networks.
